Daily Five/ CAFE Leveled Readers
The objective of purchasing leveled books is to match students with appropriate text they can read independently ("good-fit" books").
Through implementation of The Daily Five including the practice of CAFE strategies, students will develop literacy skills enabling them to become independent readers and writers. Students will be taught to set goals for their learning. Conferring with the students regularly will provide accountability for both the students and teacher to insure both reasonable goal-setting and adequate progress toward those goals.
Regular individual assessment and flexible grouping with students in strategy groups will provide authentic measures of students growing sophistication as readers and writers. Use of running records to measure reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension will insure students are making adequate progress and continuing to set challenging yet reasonable goals. Additional formal assessment such as the district DSA and the state CST tests will provide even more data to support evidence of adequate progress toward state standards at and above grade level.
This grant will be used to purchase leveled readers for students, which are integral to reading development. Students who are able to read high-interest fiction and non fiction books at their appropriate reading level improve decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. They are able to enjoy reading and see themselves as “good readers" thereby fostering a continuing love of reading. Ideally these skills then translate to both writing and spelling proficiency.
Our PLC is committed to the TTUSD Core Message "Every student learning every day." This is best accomplished by facilitating students' development of productive independence in the classroom. When students can practice continuous goal-setting and access materials they can read at their level, they are empowered to take charge of their growth as readers, writers, and lifelong learners.
