Fit-Stats: Healthy and Active Learning
The FitStats program would provide a user-friendly platform to meet individual student’s, families’, and teachers’ needs to easily monitor a student (or access a group of students progress as a grade level or by gender) overall wellness and activity level. Because of the dramatic increases in childhood overweight and obesity, along with a decrease in regular physical activity, many children are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, at younger ages. In California, only 1 out of 3 children rated “fit” in all six areas of the 2009-2010 California Physical Fitness Report. Using the California Depart of Education web site (at NTS/NTHS) currently only 50% of 5th graders; 33%of 7th graders, and; 11% of 11th graders meet the healthy fitness in all six categories. By starting with our youngest students the FitStats/Be-Fit programs can potentially monitor, inform, and personalize testing, create student/parent surveys, enable more thorough progress reports and promote greater student and family activity and healthy habits, which will be carried over into future years of development.
Participating PE teachers will implement annual fitness testing for all students beginning in 1st grade. This data will be entered into the Fit Stat program and used to monitor student fitness levels, identify students who need additional support, and assess and improve the effectiveness of physical activity interventions at school. Currently at KBE the Be-Fit Program is underway. All 270 Kindergarten – third grade students have participated in initial physical fitness assessments and interviews, which explore nutritional understanding and activity levels outside of school. The FitStates program will help manage and organize data, develop reports, analyze, and synthesize collected information.
The overall effectiveness of the Fit Stat program will be assessed by comparing the improvement of FITNESSGRAM scores in 5th, 7th, and 9th grades for the k-3rd grade students who will be participating in the FIT Stat assessments and tracking over the next 2-5 years.

In addition, Fit-Stats will help evaluate the effectiveness of the PE curriculum enhance PE and school activity programs to promote student wellness and fitness in and out of school.
Currently, the TTUSD is focused on effective, research based, and data supported programs. Students are evaluated, monitored, and concepts and academic skills are re-taught (RTI) to achieve student cognitive and academic growth. The FitStats program and the Be-Fit KBE pilot program is data driven and aligned with California Physical Education Content Standards. With success and improved student fitness, activity levels, and family involvement the Be-Fit program has the potential to be applied district wide. Positive self-esteem, preparedness to learn academically, and overall psycho-social wellness is directly related to a child being active and physically healthy.
