Description

Hands on Math manipulatives that bring the Grade 8 Mathematics Standards to life!  This is an expansion of an existing set of materials that are favorites in the grade 8 math classroom.

Benefits of Program

These materials will be used across all of the grade 8 math classrooms and are of particular benefit to students that feel disengaged from mathematics.  Hands on math experiences are a proven portal to engage students in successful and lasting positive math experiences.

Success of Program

Students can only be successful in mathematics when they are engaged in learning.  Hands on math experiences are a proven portal to engage students in successful and lasting positive math experiences.

Implementation

These materials will be used in all grade 8 math classrooms and can be shared across grade levels as well.  The materials are used consistently throughout the year as we follow the spirling CPM curriculum. Here are some examples in each Grade 8 Mathematics Domain. 8.NS Number System:  Students use the magnetic tiles to build a set of visual Perfect Squares. 8.EE Expressions and Equations & 8.F Functions:  Students use the magnetic tiles to design and model patterns of linear growth. 8.G Geometry:  Students use the kinetic sand and modeling dough with the 3-D Geometry models while deriving formulas for 3-Dimensional shapes. Students will  construct geometric models on the large dry erase board with the wood compass set.  8.SP Statistics & Probability:  Students use the magnetic tiles to model associations between bivariate data on the dry erase board.
