Description

Donner Trail and our amazing PTO has provided and implemented a Spanish program that reaches all students as one of our weekly enrichment classes. It has been a wonderful experience and students are applying concepts quickly in this interactive language program. Teachers weave lessons into our morning circles so that Spanish language learning happens everyday. We would like to purchase games, alphabet cards, and a few additional resources to help support our curriculum and to better create cross curricular ties to what they are learning in Spanish. 

 

Benefits of Program

Our school is seeing this as an additional opportunity to really bring alive our multi-age learning program. Students work in integrated groups and resources can be utilized across ability groups, learning styles, and age levels. The Spanish enrichment directly ties to our local community. The Spanish materials will immerse students more in the language which in turn will allow them to become more fluent more quickly. Students are better connected and prepared to communicate with their peers through the Spanish materials and gain a deeper understanding of how the world around them works.   This great will help build well-rounded young citizens. 

Success of Program

The Spanish material success will directly enhance the curriculum we already have.  Students will be able to increase their depth and rate of learning, communicate across grade levels on a common theme in the language, and be able to connect to others within their community. It will also allow the teachers to better integrate the language during our everyday curriculum so that it is not just isolated to our Spanish language instructional time. 

Implementation

In Spanish, we have curriculum but are missing these few games and resources that will really connect kids. We will use them during our weekly Spanish instruction in each classroom where students will share . We are also trying to incorporate some of these tools into our reading block as concepts correlate with what we are learning. 

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

This grant is being submitted by our entire school. We have discussed this as a team as important components that can be added to our school wide learning opportunities.  

Sustainability
This is a one time need that won't need further funding in the future. Any replacement pieces or additional supplements can be provided through our PTO or classroom funds if necessary. Again, this is a one time overhead cost.

Other funding sources

We have worked with our PTO to purchase Spanish curriculum and begin that programming. We have also accessed some technology funds to begin coding this year.  However, as a team, we decided that these costs are more than we can currently take on.
