3 Mobile whiteboards will allow the entire Math class to meet in small groups of three to four students around the classroom to collaborate on Math problems in class. The mobile boards will supplement the whiteboard space already provided, and utilize areas of the room with windows and shelving where traditional white boards cannot be mounted on the wall.
50+ students per year in my 6th grade core classes will benefit from the use of these "vertical non-permanent surfaces" as they problem solve in Math class. Additionally, approximately 20 AVID students in my AVID elective course would also use the boards for their weekly tutorials.
According to researcher Peter Liljedahl in his book, Building Thinking Classrooms, these mobile whiteboards, are termed "vertical non-permanent surfaces" to demonstrate their research based effectiveness (see attached paper). As they are vertical, all members in a group have equal access in viewing them (versus on a table). As they are non-permanent, students are more likely to try new thinking, take chances and get started more quickly on a whiteboard than on a poster. Additionally, having all students working at the boards allows for me as a teacher to view thinking more easily in order to assist more easily where needed. Students are also able to see other teams' work more easily to consider other possibilities.
Mobile whiteboards will be used in both my Math and AVID courses. Additionally, the Resource Teacher and paraprofessionals can use the boards for small group instruction and differentiation.
