Program Objectives (10 points)

The Sagehen Outdoor Education Program is an established, unique environmental education program for fifth grade students in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. It is housed at the UC Berkeley Research Station just outside of Truckee. Classes of fifth grade students come throughout the month for a 2 day/1night or 3 day/2 night program. 5th grade students learn a variety of skills and gain knowledge about local ecosystems, flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada, macro-invertebrates, water quality and issues, topographical mapping, plant and animal identification, insects, and other environmental education topics. Classes are taught by outdoor educators, the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), and SWEP (the local watershed education non-profit). The objective of the Sagehen Outdoor Education Program is to expose students to a variety of environmental projects and outdoor activities that will increase their level of understanding and appreciation for the outdoors. As well, an important goal is to keep our curriculum aligned with the common core standards. We have chosen to make Sagehen part of our educational experience because we are in control of the curriculum that is being taught. We are in constant contact with the non-profit organizations we contract with and the outdoor education instructors that are hired to teach during the program. This collaboration helps the TTUSD teachers ensure all classes taught at the Sagehen Outdoor Education Program are aligned with the common core standards.
