Description

The Truckee Elementary School Library is expanding and improving the newly formed STEAM Lab located within the library. Our hope is to provide the STEAM Readers curriculum to each grade level so that they may integrate literacy and STEAM activities into their weekly routine.

Benefits of Program

Build students' literacy skills while fostering curiosity, creativity, and innovation! Created in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, this STEAM curriculum uses real-world examples to give students insight into how the engineering design process is used to solve real-world problems. The books feature dynamic images and text features that enhance the reading experience and build visual literacy, and include STEAM career advice from Smithsonian employees working in STEAM fields. This will offer out TES Cubs the opportunity to read engaging texts and integrate the reading into design thinking/hands on building activities.

Success of Program

Featuring high-interest topics based on Smithsonian content, these STEAM resources include hands-on STEAM challenges that guide students through every step of the engineering design process and content that highlights every aspect of STEAM: science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. When students become STEAM proficient, students are prepared to answer complex questions, investigate global issues, and develop solutions for modern-day problems. STEAM readers support social and emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom and aligns to state and national college and career readiness standards, including NGSS.

Implementation

We will use the STEAM readers at every grade level and in every classroom. Students will be presented with the reading activity based on their own reading level. They will then bring the post reading  activity into the learning lab for design process. They will work with a small team of 3 to 4 students to extend the learning!

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?
