    This weather station is designed to work in conjunction with the Glenshire Elementary and North Tahoe High School weather stations with Excellence in Education has already funded. We would like to give seed money for this project with a plan to seek additional funds from outside groups such as Alpine Winter Foundation, area TV stations, Sierra Snow Lab, or CalTrans. Weather info from this critical area could provide for an array of sources to enhance road condition info. - $2000

    Books will be sent home to encourage parents to read to their kindergarten aged children. These books are designed specifically for young readers. - $529
  • Accelerated Reading Program and Reading Chain Books - Markheim
    Homogeneous groups of reading levels are formed in reading chains where formula phonics, comprehension skills, learning to read and reading to learn techiques are assimulated into a reading aloud program. Accelerated Reading allows students to self-test for reading comprehension and progress at their own ability level. - $3000

    These Kindergarten teachers have designed a physical education program for its students that incorperates the use of music to promote movement education. The equipment will also be utalized to teach concepts in language, math, science, and social science as well. Rhythmic instruments, a parachute, matts, balls, bean bags and other equipment will be purchased along with a storage cart so it can be easily transported from room to room. - $1700

    Joan O'Lear's ESL students have very little if any formal education. They are typically illiterate in their native language and have no proficiency in other subject areas. A variety of educational materials will be purchased for Ms. O'Lear's class so students can progress in their education while learning english at the same time. Their will be a tutorial relationship with Danny Brolliar's class at Tahoe Lake Elementary and a science class to foster self esteem, multicultural diversity and reinforce concepts. The higher math abd science classes will be teamed with sheltered or esl classes to enhance curriculum. - $2242
  • Television Screen fro Writing Instruction - Roberts
    A large screen television monitor will be used to display student writing for evaluation and discussion. Writting models can be sued for comment and edification to give students a chance of achieving their greatest writing style and voice. The teacher has already purchased components necessary to modify her computer into a screen monitor which will accept info both from disk and direct typing. - $1500

    This grant will fund an annual subscription to Home and School's Middle Years, -a publication of resources for educators, Succeeding in Middle School Module and Study Skills for Success Worksheets. These materials include a parent involvement newsletter for middle grade parents, a teachers guide for improving study skills and videos aimed at improving self esteem and ucceeding in middle school. The videos will be available to teachers and parents and will also be shared with SMM. - $1239

    A case will be built to house a portion of the Big Tree Trunk. Historical markings and weather information will be identified and on dysplay in the school hallway. - $525
  • Landscaping Project - VIPS
    This energetic group of parents initiated a landscaping project at both the Middle and High Schools to enhance the appearance of the schools, giving students more pride in their school as well as giving them a place to meet outside. Students were involved in the design of the Paver portion of the project and as well as the estimates for materials and supplies. - $1000

  • Baby Think It Over Program - Spor/ Sura
    The baby think it over program utilizes life-like computerized "dolls" which stimulate actual infant behaviors over long periods of time. Teens assigned to care for the dolls are expected to be responsible for all areas of care twenty-four hours a day for a designated period of time, usually 2 or 3 weeks. Twenty-three percent of the student population has been directly involve in a teen pregnancy or teen parenting situation. - $1352
  • Computer Rebuliding Class Materials - Solvason
    These funds will purchase a personal computer system rebuilding projectfor the Advanced Technology class. The project will first be introduced to the process and proceduresin buliding a computer system then a larger scale undertaking will occur where the students will rebuild a multitude of donated computer systems to be distributed within the educational community. - $1800

    A new mathematics curriculum has been adopted at SMM that stresses problem solving and local thinking while maximizing a hands on approach. The educational math games reinforce these concepts and will also be used in the Hour of Power, an after school homework club. - $300
  • Chamber Ensemble Music - Humphreys
    With a goal to provide students with a chamber ensemble program, solo and ensemble literature will be purchased to begin a library of musical scored from which students are able to perform. SMM is unable to provide music education in orchestral piano, guitar and choral ares. - $3000

    The SPECTRA art program is a slide based educational art curriculum that involves all learning styles and engages students in creating successful and meaningful artwork. After viewing slides, discussing the technique, cultural and social significance students are guided through a grade appropriate hands on lesson. - $500
  • Leveled Reading Materials, Nutrition and Cultural Diversity - Thomas
    Nutrition education is presented in a way that exposes students to the many cultures and eating habits in the world. "Everybody Cooks Rice" is a creative way to use literature to teach about nutrition and multi-cultural topics. The book tells about the use of rice in Vietnam, Puerto Rico, India and other countries. In addition this teacher has requested leveled reading materials since she is a new teacher and does nogt have sufficient reading materials in her classroom to meet all reading ailities. - $500

    A weather station will be situated outside Tahoe Lake School enabling students to monitor weather patterns. Students will also be given the weeks "Forcast" during morning announcements. - $1200

    This teacher has spearheaded an effort to not only landscape an extensive area around the portable classrooms but to also incorporate science in form of gardening, cooperative learning, mathmatics and language arts activities. - $1000

    Since our district no longer has acsess to the 5000 videos at the Placer County Office of Education this teacher has requested funds for a library of videos that can be shared with Glenshire Elementary. This will provide a visual learning experience for students to compliment the hands on the curriculum. - $800
