Listening Centers
Effective literacy centers contain multisensory and differentiated activities that help meet the diverse range of student interests, ability levels, and needs. Literacy centers not only give the teacher an opportunity to meet with small groups for direct instruction, but they also provide meaningful learning activities for all students. The use of literacy centers creates the structure to deliver differentiated instruction. A key component of literacy centers is a listening station at which students are able to follow along in text while listening to a fluent reader read a story. Listening centers effectively improve both reading comprehension and reading fluency.
Listening stations will be used on a daily basis during Literacy Center time.
The success of listening stations will be measured by increased fluency and reading comprehension as is measured in common assessments, DSAs, and the CSTs.
Literacy Centers are a key component in effective elementary English Language Arts instruction, and a listening center is key in providing differentiation and targeted support for emerging readers. This grant is requesting equipment to ensure that every classroom at Tahoe Lake can include a listening center as a component of literacy centers.
Having Listening Centers in every clssroom will allow grade level PLCs to further align instruction and the use of the same instructional strategies in moving all students to reading at grade level.
