Literacy Enrichment for Third Grade
This literacy grant aims to:-increase bilingualism and bilitercy of all students, and especially those who struggle in reading language arts.-increase reading fluency and develop reading/translation strategies for all students.-increase understanding of verb forms in English and in Spanish.-increase knowledge of structure and purpose of the dictionary, in Spanish.
The literacy grant for third grade will be implemented in the following ways:-Audio cds will be sent for home for at home practice. They will also be used in class as listening centers and with personal discmen.-501 Spanish verbs will be used during writing, small group work, centers, and for parent/aide assistance.-Dictionaries will be used during explicit instruction, small group work, and centers.-Spanish-English dictionaries will be particularly useful for writing centers and with parent volunteers.
In order to measure student success, we will:-Test students' pre and post reading scores using Running Records and QRI assessments.-Test students' fluency based on their words per minute score.-Examine students' writing assessments based on Step-Up-To-Writing Rubrics.- Study CST scores from 2nd grade and in 3rd grade.-Analyze Houghton Mifflin Theme tests and District Assessments (DSAs).-PLC model to analyze student's needs on a "One Student, One Standard" model.
This grant aims to increase literacy in the bilingual classroom through the use of multiple modalities. In order to promote fluency and a solid understanding of language, this grant would purchase bilingual books with audio cds for use in the classroom and at home. This goal of this grant would also be to increase understanding of the Spanish language with the purchase of Spanish dictionaries, 501 Spanish verbs, and Spanish-English dictionaries. This would enable students to acquire more literacy in Spanish and English while at home and in school.
This grant ties into our PLC in many ways, including:-Increasing student acheivement in all academic areas, by increasing literacy.-Aiding RTI (Response to Intervention) with the use of audio cds and reference books.-Aiding all student success by increasing language arts reading levels.-Focusing on the essential standards in order to promote proficiency and advance levels of testing in all academic subjects.
