The Wolverine Newspaper
The Wolverine Newspaper provides students interested in journalism an outlet for their creativity. It reports on events currently happening at the school, recognizes achievements throughout the year, and focuses on student interests. The newspaper increases school pride and participation.
The Newspaper Club students meet at lunch on Friday to discuss the upcoming issues. They assign or volunteer to write articles and set a deadline for completion. The editors of the newspaper edit the articles; work with the Sierra Sun to layout each issue and follow-up on missing articles. The students are also responsible for turning in any advertisements that they have gotten that quarter. The Sierra Sun sends the advisor a PDF of the upcoming issue to address any changes that might need to be made. The issue then is released as an insert in the Friday edition of the Sierra Sun. The school also receives about 250 copies to give to the students and teachers.
Student feedback, making deadlines, seeing students reading the paper.
Students at Truckee High School created a Newspaper Club last year. We currently have about 12-20 students that have been working with the Sierra Sun to print a quarterly school newspaper. The "Wolverine" reports on various school related activities from Homecoming to Graduation. The students sell advertisements around the area to fund the paper each quarter. We are currently about to print our fifth edition of the paper. The paper costs $550 an issue, the students at Truckee High receive each issue for free.
The Wolverine is a cross-curricular paper. It reports on a wide array of events/interests from all across the school, including every grade level. The Wolverine is a popular activity on the Friday it is released and often used during that day's Advisory period.
