Description

The objective of this program is to support vocabulary developement.  The relationship between word knowledge and understanding of text, or comprehension, is well established.  Vocabulary is also correlated with writing ability and with spelling. The stronger a student’s vocabulary, the better he or she performs in all areas of the curriculum.

Success of Program

One of the reasons we would like to begin using this system is because of the monitoring and reporting system that is included.  We have used the paper version of Wordly Wise for several years, and it has been great.  However, the students did not receive immediate feedback about their success, and teachers were required to do extensive grading in order to measure a student's achievement.  The online version provides this feedback automatically, creates reports for teacher use, and even provides extra practice on the specific skills and words that students demonstrate a need for.

Implementation

The Wordly Wise 3000 online program fits beautifully with our Daily 5 literacy program.  Students can access the online program each day during one of their literacy rotations.  The program provides audio support (crucial for our English Learners and struggling readers), immediate feedback, and multiple exposures to words that are vital to their academic growth.  In addition, students are able to access this program at home on a daily basis.
