Description

The objective of teaching and using calculators in the classroom is to build conceptual understanding, and develop a depth of knowledge while providing careful focused instruction to all students in the critical areas of focus: Understanding of the base-ten system and Understanding of addition to develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 1000. 

Success of Program

Playing these games during class will allow the teacher time for Assessment Check-in to informally assess students on their progress with California State Standards, Operations and Algebraic Thinking and Number 2.0A and Operations in Base Ten 2.NBT.

Implementation

The calculator strategy uses games to build understanding of the base-ten system and understanding of addition to develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 1000. Students will play many games during class instruction over the course of the school year to build number sense and addition fluency, i.e. Beat the Calculator, Broken-Calculator problems, skip counting, counting with, Calculator change puzzles, and Calculator place-value puzzles are a few of these calculator games.

The use of calculators is part of the mathematical learning process for all students. This grant will benefit the second grade students as well as the teachers at Truckee Elementary building confidence and ensuring positive feelings about math giving every child the opportunity to succeed.

Notes

Truckee Elementary currently has 100 second grade students. I am requesting calculators for 120 students. This would allow teachers to have 5 back-up calculators due to possible breakage or damage over the future years.

Comments

Delta Education - Set of 10 calculators $44.99 ; 12 sets of calculators $539.88. For a total of 120 calculators. This would give each teacher 5 extra calculators in case of breakage or damage in future years.
