Description

Students will further their understanding of their impact with the Trout in the Classroom service project. The Lahonton Cutthroat Trout are native to the area but overfishing led to their demise. Students are raising the fish and releasing them into the local waterways in hopes they will return and thrive in the area. Understanding more about the watersheds, lake health including clarity, invasive species, the food chain and zooplankton helps the students deepen their understanding as they become ambassadors for area environmental health and the baby fish they are invested in helping survive and thrive.

Success of Program

All students at Truckee Elementary will have had the benefit of observing and learning about the Lahonton Cutthroat Trout in the Science Lab. Upon returning to school, the 4th grade students will write persuasive essays, create posters and educate the school about the need to protect and preserve the watersheds and area lakes in order for the Lahonton Cutthroat Trout to survive.

Implementation

Using the Next generation Science Standards as a guide, 4th grade students will learn about and raise Lahonton Cutthroat Trout in their classrooms and in the Science Lab at school. Before their release in June 2016, students will participate in the watershed activities and water ecology research on the Great Basin Outdoor School/Marine Research and Education vessel, the Prophet, on Lake Tahoe in late May.
