The RNIB PenFriend is a plastic pen shaped recorder. The PenFriend features 127 self-adhesive  labels that can be used to record and re-record information. This easy to use technology requires students to simply tap the recorder to the adhesive label to hear the pre-recorded audio, as set by the teacher. There is no limit to the length of the recording associated with each label and the labels can be re-recorded as many times as needed. The adhesive labels come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A build-in speaker on the PenFriend is used to project the audio however; there is headphone capability to allow for multiple students to utilize this tool at the same time without distracting others. This device runs on 2 AAA batteries and does not require a computer for use. It does, however, have computer capability with a USB cable to export audio clips if desired. These tools were extremely valuable when purchased for the kindergarten classrooms and I would like to purchase 3 for my stuggling readers in the 4th grade. In regards to mathematics, the PenFriend would help to increase the number sense of the students at Truckee Elementary by giving the auditory support for interpreting word problems. Additionally, this device would provide English Language Learners (ELLs) in fourth with the auditory support to help enhance the Avenues curriculum that is currently used. This form of technology can also benefit students in Response to Intervention (RTI). This device provide endless opportunities for differentiating instruction though recording auditory support for any content a student might need additional instruction in.

Success of Program (10 points)

 The success of the implementation of the Penfriend will be measured by the increase in student assessments. Based on the beginning of the year baseline assessments, the students’ academic achievement will be based on the level of knowledge and skills the students demonstrate exiting the fourth grade.

Implementation (10 points)

This grant was approved in 2013 for the kindergarten classess. This is a valuable tool for all grade levels. Specifically, this tool will be used for struggling readers to increase their reading leveling through recording sounds, words, math problems, directions, and classroom reminders.

Yes. This device can be shared. It will be use with other classes during differentiate learning times. This is a strong tool for students will learning needs.
