Description

The Public Safety Pathway offered by TTUSD is the only pathway that has students attending from NTHS, THS and SHS. I am very excited we are able to have students attend their “home” high school but experience a CTE pathway course of interest. The objective of this grant is to protect and organize our firefighting turnout gear and publicly recognize the program. The Step-In Trunout bags will organize and protect $2,380 worth of equipment (helmet, jacket, pants, boots, hood and gloves). Our turnout gear is the same turnout gear Truckee Fire uses. Since our helmets are the same as Truckee Fire’s they have a space on the front for leather shield. I would like to utilize that shield space with information that recognizes the Public Safety pathway.

Benefits of Program

Equipment is a key component to the Public Safety program. Protection of the equipment is essential for the equipment's longevity. Organization of the equipment is very important also. With organized equipment not only is storage easier but more importantly access to equipment use is easier allowing participants in the program to utilize more equipment during our class sessions.

Success of Program

This is the first year the Public Safety program has been offered and with every passing month I hear about more students interested in the program. Not only is this pathway a perfect fit for the Tahoe Truckee community but the equipment our program has and the access to public safety organizations and professionals in our community is outstanding. Plus the Public Safety pathway currently has students attending from three different high schools in our district, SHS, THS and NTHS. Having students attend the program from three different high schools show the need and importance of the program in our district.

Implementation

The turnout gear, which includes the helmets is a fundamental part of the program. This gear is used or referred to weekly because it is the foundation to the firefighter’s profession.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

The equipment is unique to the Public Safety pathway, as a result there is no subject level team that would also be using the equipment. However, the equipment is already used for or will be used to showcase the pathway at different events like an 8th grade first aid/CPR event coordinated by Truckee Fire, Summer School CTE Public Safety program and the STEAM fair.

Sustainability
Step-In Trunout bags and helmet shields are designed to withstand professional firefighting use, as a result the equipment will last at least 10 years.
