Frida, a 2023 Truckee High School graduate, earned several awards at graduation, including the Excellence in Education McGinity Scholarship. Created in memory of the McGinity family’s son and in recognition of their service to Excellence in Education, the scholarship supports students pursuing healthcare careers. For Frida, whose dream is to become a nurse, it was a perfect match.
Since graduating, Frida has completed her degree at Sacramento City College and will soon begin a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at Sierra College in Rocklin. Her goal is to attend nursing school at Sacramento State. As the first in her family to attend college, she calls the experience exciting and challenging, navigating unfamiliar territory while embracing new opportunities in a new city.
This summer, Frida returned home to teach at Aim High, a summer academic and enrichment program for middle school students run in partnership with Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Excellence in Education has supported Aim High since the Tahoe Truckee campus opened in 2012. Frida’s journey with the program began as a student, continued as a volunteer, and has now come full circle as she served as the STEM teacher.
“What made me want to teach at Aim High was the opportunity to come back and create the same impact that so many of my teachers had on me,” Frida shared.
While teaching is rewarding, Frida’s heart is set on nursing, specializing in pediatrics, pediatric oncology, NICU, or OB/GYN. She has found her deepest passion in caring for children’s physical and emotional well-being. Her Aim High experience strengthened her empathy, patience, and advocacy, qualities she will carry into her nursing career to make a lasting difference in young lives.
Frida’s story is a beautiful example of the connections between people and programs that Excellence in Education is proud to support.Photo caption: Past Excellence in Education Executive Director Laura Brown and Frida at the Aim High Open House visiting day in Kings Beach.
