Description

PE department chair, Renee Collins and My self would like to propose a grant to purchase a class set of heart rate monitors for the Truckee High School Physical Education Department.  The American Heart Association explains that close monitoring of your heart rate during exercise is the key not only to knowing that you're working out strenuously enough, but whether you're improving your fitness over time. While there are other means of judging the efficacy of your routines (like how hard you're breathing, how tired you are, whether you can walk or sing, etc.), heart rate monitoring is the single most reliable method. It provides objective data.  We would like to teach our students not only how to calculate their heart rates but how to apply that information to their fitness routines for the rest of their lives.

Benefits of Program

PE department chair, Renee Collins and myself would like to propose a grant to purchase a class set of heart rate monitors for the Truckee High School Physical Education Department.  The American Heart Association explains that close monitoring of your heart rate during exercise is the key not only to knowing that you're working out strenuously enough but whether you're improving your fitness over time. As we move the Physical Education program more and more towards a focus of lifelong fitness, this allows the students to monitor their fitness and fitness goals.

Success of Program

I feel that we are maintaining and improving the very successful program that coach Shaffer started.  We have been very successful at running a modern physical fitness program that has moved past the tradition PE games and more to towards the CrossFit era that we live in.

Implementation

We already teach lessons on diet, fitness, strength, and endurance in our classes.  In those lessons, we teach how to calculate your resting heart rate and how to train within your target heart rate ranges.  These monitors will allow us to teach these lessons at the beginning of the course and then use the monitors in our daily activities for the students to learn and track their own fitness and progress.  We will use these during our circuits and fitness tests like the mile run as well as during our normal sports and activities.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes. This would be used for all of our Physical Education, Dance, Strength Development, and Performance classes.

Sustainability
Yes. These would be used during class and then stored in their hard case in the PE storage area. The longevity of this grant could last between 7-12 years. Over the course of 2-3 years, we might have to replace 3-4 due to loss or damage, but as a whole, the set would have a long life.
