We would like to refresh some of our counseling materials with experiential fun books that kids love to listen to and learn from. As counselors, we focus heavily on growth mindset, compassion, character strengths etc and kids learn best through visuals and touching items. Being able to hold, play and interact with the material is instrumental in learning.

Benefits of Program

All children benefit from developing prosocial skills. In fact, one of the early indicators of college graduation is traced to social emotional development in Kindergarten. These books are books accessed by the entire school, as well as families looking for extra support.

The Benefits of School-Based Social and Emotional Learning Programs: Highlights from a Major New Report A new study reveals that students who participate in school-based programs focused on social and emotional learning (SEL) profit in multiple ways. Compared to students who do not experience SEL programming, they improve significantly with respect to: 1. Social and emotional skills 2. Attitudes about themselves, others, and school 3. Social and classroom behavior 4. Conduct problems such as classroom misbehavior and aggression 5. Emotional distress such as stress and depression 6. Achievement test scores and school grades, including an 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement These positive results do not come at the expense of performance in core academic skills, but rather enhance academic achievement. Moreover, the results are maintained among those studies that collect follow-up data in each of the above categories.

Success of Program

We track our student's SEL competencies through the DESSA so if we see a decrease in kids needing support this will be part of it.

This is something that can be implemented immediately. We use books and manipulatives daily in our small groups and individual sessions.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Absolutely - this can be shared district wide.

We will not need continuing money for this grant. The books stay in our office and travel to classroom with counselors. I do sometimes lend books out to parents which is possible with these, however, we tend to keep our books here and suggest parents check them out in our office.

I want to clarify that this is something that the whole school can use repeatedly.
