Description

At each school within our district we continue to have students who are reading significantly below grade level and not responding to interventions. The Sonday System is an evidence-based and research-based, systematic and explicit reading and spelling program designed for students who have difficulty in the areas of decoding and spelling. This program is unique because training can be done quickly, and implementation can be done easily. The program is designed to be taught not only by teachers, but also paraprofessionals and other school staff. In addition to the benefits that systematic reading instruction can provide, students can also benefit from the ability to generalize these newly learned skills.

Unfortunately, the Sonday System does not supply meaningful texts for students to practice their newly learned reading skills; however, the program developers have suggested and recommended high quality decodable text in which students can practice their reading skills. These specific texts are of interest to our special education team because they offer the students opportunities to practice learned skills with high interest, controlled text with lower readability. It can be difficult to find decodable texts for our older students. Phonic Books offer materials for a wide range of ages that have been popular with students in other special education classes across the district.

Benefits of Program

For the last two school years here at Tahoe Lake, the students receiving reading and spelling instruction through the Sonday System have not had the opportunity to practice and generalize their learned skills within texts with intriguing graphics, offering opportunities for a deeper level of comprehension.

This grant will provide reading support for all students that require intensive reading support through Special Education services as well as students receiving reading intervention in the following grades:

  • Transitional Kindergarten
  • Kindergarten
  • 1st
  • 2nd
  • 3rd
  • 4th
  • 5th
Success of Program

On-going progress monitoring by special education and general education teachers will evaluate students’ reading progress.  Phonic Books can be used to measure fluency, decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary growth and offer cumulative progression which allows for previous learning to be included as the reader progresses. This ensures that what has been learned is included and practiced along the way giving all student access to the core curriculum.

Implementation

Phonic Books are an easy and engaging tool for teachers, paraprofessionals and anyone working with students who struggle with reading. The Phonic Books are designed to be used one-on-one or in a small group setting. The program can be implemented within a Special Education environment  and/or small reading intervention groups. The Sonday System, which these Phonic Books would be taught in conjunction with, requires 35-minute sessions, 4-5 times a week for intensive intervention, and taught in a small group setting (no more than 4-5 students).

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes. This program will provide all Special Education teachers K-5 with another tool to use for students who struggle with reading and are not responding to other reading interventions. As struggling readers begin to improve their skills they are more likely to access the core curriculum, which also ties into our participation in our Special Education PLC’s and our site grade level PLC's.

Sustainability
Yes, 5 copies of each book requested would be sustainable for the entire life of the books. No additional funding would be needed for years to come.

Notes

Speaking with other Special Education teachers around the district and hearing how much their elementary students enjoy reading these books makes me excited to write this grant and hope for the best.
