Description

Our grade level would like a grant to fund three Scholastic News Subscriptions for our ELD groups. It is an excellent resource that provides current informative text samples for students. Reading informative text is a priority in second grade standards and having a resource that effectively demonstrates this is important to student learning. In our English Language Development classes we want current news to drive our academic disourse. We want two ELD classes to have access to the second grade magazines and our lowest ELD class to have access to the first grade magazines.

Benefits of Program

As a grade level, we have determined that reading informational text (RI 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10) is part of our prioritized standards. All students would benefit from this resource. All students who use this resource will be exposed to information about other cultures, different perspectives from the world and current events. This would enhance our social studies standards by providing age appropriate information supporting our curriculum. We have decided that we need magazines that are a lower lexile for our intervention students, so they are able to access quality informational text.

Success of Program

This program will enhance the classroom by providing literature that is rigorous yet attainable, providing thought provoking content. This program meets numerous literacy standards and addresses current innovations in science, technology, health and social issues. Student success can be measured in improvements of student close reading and critical thinking skills. Students will be able to learn about these topics and practice listening and speaking together.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes, it will be shared among our ELD classes to drive academic discourse. Each month each classroom gets four to five magazines to share with the class. This gives teachers an opportunity to read a Scholastic News magazine in ELD. The Scholastic News magazines will be read with the medium, low (second grade level magazine) and newcomer (first grade level magazine) ELD groups. The magazines provide interesting topics as well as extra resources for students to practice academic discourse.
