Description

Truckee Elementary 4th grade is requesting  nonfiction book sets to support social studies reading after the Gold Rush. Our library has book sets about California history, however the historical novels end with California Ranchos. Books are needed that tell the story after 1900. The titles align with the State Standards and  one addresses the UN's Global Goal 4 - Quality Education and Goal 10 - Reduced Inequalities.

Benefits of Program

All 4th grade students will benefit from our expanded collection. The books will also be available to students of other grades.

Success of Program

Students love to read about California history. The new books will support student learning and foster excitement about non-fiction reading. I hope students will choose to read non-fiction books on their own. The books are about the internment of Japanese-Californians during World War 2, famous Californians (Disney and Muir) and the civil rights movement.

Implementation

The book sets are available in the school library and are used by all Truckee Elementary teachers.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

All 4th grade teachers and our ELD teacher will utilize these books. All other grades will have access to these materials to meet individual learning needs.

Sustainability
The book sets will remain in our school library and will be used for many years to support social studies literacy and student interests.
