Description

This grant is for a set of Discussion 4 Learning VocabulArte Levels A-D. VocabulArte provides support for all students, native speakers of Spanish and Spanish learners, to develop high-level academic vocabulary and language in Spanish through engaging discussions of fine art images and real-world photos from around the world. The use of images, discussion, and explicit vocabulary instruction provides scaffolding for all levels of readers and language learners.

VocabulArte lessons address the following standards:

SL.5-8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

SL.5-8.2 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
SL.5-8.3 Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.

Benefits of Program

"Vocabulary knowledge is knowledge; the knowledge of a word not only implies a definition, but also implies how that word fits into the world" (Stahl, 2005).

There is no one defined way to enhance and instruct vocabulary, but research agrees that building and exposing students to vocabulary strengthens literacy skills and comprehension. One way to build vocabulary is to foster word consciousness in students. Word consciousness is defined as an awareness of and interest in words. VocabulArte provides engaging lessons focused on building vocabulary by introducing and reviewing academic vocabulary by discussing and comparing fine art and real world images.

Success of Program

By purchasing levels A-D, students have access to tiered vocabulary instruction based on their instructional level. As language and literacy skills develop during intermediate schooling, vocabulary instruction in Vocabularte becomes more advanced and challenging. Vocabulary skills mastered in Spanish, students’ primary or secondary language, can be applied to academic instruction in English. This strengthens students’ abilities to choose a strategy to meet their learning styles and needs. Speaking and listening have also been a focus for instruction at North Tahoe School as well as the district as a whole. Students engage in authentic discussions and build background knowledge, while providing all students an opportunity to participate because the lessons focus on what students see in the images.

Implementation

Throughout the school year, Vocabularte lessons will be used to build background and extend vocabulary instruction for content through fun and interactive discussions. Students will strengthen language acquisition and build confidence in holding academic conversations. These levels and guided lessons can be re-used yearly in grades 5-8, as a whole group or small group reading and vocabulary interventions. These lessons can also be adapted to fit distance learning, engaging students in writing the Spanish language.
