Description

There are three program objectives to come from this grant. Primarily, Microsoft Office is needed to transfer previous work from electronic files to new computers to reduce the amount of time teachers are prepping lessons, which they already created on their old computers. In doing so, teachers will be able to concentrate on creating completely new lessons that they would not have had time for. Secondly, teachers will be able to optimize their new MacBook Pro computers by making technologically-integrated lessons and presentations for students that are more dynamic than that of the formatting permitted with the current software. Lastly, at present, Microsoft Office is a more universally accepted software format for student learning that is used by both PC and Mac computer users, so obtaining this software will allow teachers to share work more freely among colleagues and with parents’ computers.

Success of Program

The success of obtaining the Microsoft Office software will be measured in the following ways. Primarily, Paula will survey teacher use of their MacBook Pros by asking questions related to how effectively California Common Core Standards and life-skills are integrated into lessons, documents and presentations before and after teachers receive the software. Secondarily, Paula will quantify the amount of lessons, documents and presentations that are created and shared on the MacBook Pros by teachers before and after they receive the software.

Implementation

Once funds are procured for the software, a purchase order for seven "Office for Mac Home and Business" packages will be placed through Microsoft with the support of KBE's tech teacher, Paula Bossler, and Administrative Secretary, Marci Calderon. Seven will be ordered because each package includes software for two computers, and there are 14 MacBook Pros in need of the software. After the order is secured and the packages are received, Paula will install the programs on each teacher's MacBook Pro. Paula will then guide teachers to place the applications in areas that are easily accessible to them on their MacBook Pros. Further support for the software will be provided through Microsoft, TTUSD Tech Help, and Paula.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

This grant will tie into PLC groups by allowing teachers to create standard-based lessons, units, presentations and assessments that will require them to mutually work together and measure student growth during grade level PLC time and through the use of electronic communications with each other. In addition, teachers will be better equipped to collaborate on the vertical and lateral cohesiveness of grade-level curriculum for the Two-Way Immersion Program at Kings Beach Elementary.
