Description

Sierra High student body and staff are in process of building an outdoor patio to offer a place for our school community to gather outside for lunch, classes, and group activities. Currently our outdoor space is a dirt area with a bent picnic bench. We would like to add two new square seating areas to our updated patio to offer areas to sit and enoy our outdoor environment. The common work space at Sierra High is limited and this seating would create more capacity within our school grounds for students to sit, partipate in group work, have lunch, and the occasional class outside. Currently we do not have seating for our new patio.

Success of Program

Success for this request will be measured by the legacy that is being created and driven by student desire. Students have asked for a more social space that they can create as their own, and have taken ownership of creating this space. By adding tables to this area, students are creating an autonomous area where they can socialize in addition to adding an alternative common area setting for learning. It is hoped that from this space, we can extend our learning to watershed restoration and gardening. This is the first step in expanding our learning out of our classrooms and into the environment around us.

Implementation

By adding the addition of two metal outdoor square picnic tables, we increase the capacity of our school's common work area. On occasion, many of our students need additional space to support to work individually to complete tasks. Sometimes those spaces need to be quiet or removed from more hectic classroom areas. While understanding that we live in an environment that is sometimes difficult to be outside during the winter, this patio's proximity to the southern exposure encourages us to hope for outdoor utilization for much of the school year.

This grant ties into our overall school PLC visions about a school community that supports alternative learning in alternative environments. We recognize the need for an environment that is aesthetically pleasing as well as academically engaging and the creation of this patio and the addition of seating space greatly adds and expands our overall school learning environment.
