Description
  • All 9th graders read the same book- The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
  • To show students an example of real-life learning 
  • To create a dialog about a core question: What does it take to be sucessful?
Success of Program

This sucess of this grant will be measured by:

  • student participation in the reading of the book
  • student participation in activities and discussion
  • survey of participants
Implementation

Students will:

  • Read the book in Pathways
  • Watch William's Ted Talks
  • Discuss the concept of success-- what do sucessful people do? How do they think? What made this windmill a sucess?
  • Watch the movie:  Moving Windmills (http://www.movingwindmills.org/documentary)
  • Participation in cross-curricular activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, California State Standards to support literacy, inquiry, curiosity and grit.

The 9th Grade Community Read will be planned during 2015-16 and will be created with the 2016-17 9th graders
